    Levee officials decry corps' dual pumping plan

    Opposition is growing among regional levee commissioners to the Army Corps of Engineers' plan for dual pumping stations on three New Orleans canals, one station to drain neighborhoods and another to operate only when floodgates are closed against storm surge.

    Instead, some members of the Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection Authority-East are advancing a plan for a single pump station on each of three canals both to drain neighborhoods and to move water around the floodgates. They say the corps' dual-station plan would increase maintenance costs, require risky synchronization of pump operation during major storms and still leave New Orleans with fragile floodwalls along the canals.

    Tropical Storm Fay to turn west, could re-enter Gulf

    Tropical Storm Fay was moving slowly north along the east coast of Florida this morning, but National Hurricane Center forecasters expect the storm to make a left turn and head back across the Florida panhandle over the next few days.

    Thunderstorms likely today and Thursday

    Today will be a wet one, with a 50 percent chance for thunderstorms during the day and 20 percent tonight, according to the National Weather Service.

    Tropical Storm Fay continues to keep forecasters guessing

    Even as Tropical Storm Fay moved ashore on Florida's west coast this morning with only 60 mph winds, National Hurricane Center forecasters decided to expand their margin of error balloon for the storm's five-day path westward to include southeastern Louisiana.

    Experts boost forecasts for rest of hurricane season

    There's hotter-than-normal water on the surface of the Atlantic Ocean between Africa and the Gulf of Mexico. The water's still a bit cooler than normal off the Pacific coast of South America.
