    Scandals prompt reform proposals in Mandeville

    Tropical Storm Fay stalled, but should move across Gulf coast this weekend

    A ridge of high pressure that has stalled Tropical Storm Fay just off the central east coast of Florida for more than a day will very slowly squeeze the storm system west across Florida's panhandle very near the Gulf of Mexico over the next three days.

    Morning Causeway commute starts well

    There are no major accidents, breakdowns or restrictions to report this morning on the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway, according to authorities.

    Traffic is flowing well in both directions.

    Tropical Storm Fay to turn west, could re-enter Gulf

    Tropical Storm Fay was moving slowly north along the east coast of Florida this morning, but National Hurricane Center forecasters expect the storm to make a left turn and head back across the Florida panhandle over the next few days.

    Early Causeway commute tripped up by breakdowns; clear now

    Counterfeit bills, heroin seized in Slidell

    Slidell firm gets nod to haul Jefferson garbage

    An advisory committee gave top billing Thursday to a Slidell waste company to begin hauling garbage from Jefferson Parish curbsides next year.

    The selection of Coastal Waste Services capped a long season of intense lobbying for one of the most expensive and politically sensitive contracts that Jefferson awards. Coastal passed the highest hurdle thus far by twice besting four competitors, with its proposals for both manual and semi-automated garbage collection service, according to the committee's report.

    Mostly sunny conditions are expected in the New Orleans area today, with an expected temperature high of 91, according to the National Weather Service.

    Partly cloudy skies are expected tonight, with lows in the mid-70s. There is a slight chance of thunderstorms Friday and Friday night, with chances of rain increasing to 40 percent on Saturday, forecasters said.

    School officials tightening hiring procedures
