Mandeville mayor vows not to drink and drive
by Cindy Chang, The Times-Picayune
Thursday July 03, 2008, 12:19 PM
Mandeville Mayor Eddie Price said in an interview Thursday that he does not believe he has a drinking problem but that he and his wife plan to see a counselor for a professional opinion.
Price acknowledged he had been drinking the night in late 2006 when he was pulled over in his city-owned Ford Expedition by two Mandeville police officers and driven back to City Hall without being given a field sobriety test.
He said he probably should not have been driving that night but that he does not recall asking for special treatment from the officers.
A few hours later, according to Mandeville Police Chief Tom Buell and an officer involved in the incident, Price was spotted pumping gas at the Shell station on North Causeway Boulevard by a concerned employee who called the police because the mayor seemed in no shape to drive.
By the time the officers arrived, Price was already gone. He said he does not remember that portion of the evening and believes he drove straight home from City Hall.
Buell confirmed on Wednesday that the incident occurred.
On Tuesday, Causeway Police Chief Felix Loicano resigned, two Causeway police officers were fired and another officer resigned for their roles in a similar incident after Price crashed through a Causeway toll booth barrier just before midnight on April 22.
The two officers who stopped Price on the Causeway did not give him a field sobriety test and he did not receive a citation for careless driving until two weeks later, after an inquiry from the Metropolitan Crime Commission.
Price said he does not plan to give up the keys to his city car and that the kind words he has received from his supporters outweigh the sometimes nasty invectives from citizens who say he should resign.
Since the Causeway incident, he has rarely had a drink outside of his own home, he said, and he vows not to get behind the wheel again after even a single drink.
"I'm sticking it out. I would hope the epitaph they write for me after I'm gone doesn't have any relation to the two things that happened," Price said. "This is all personal and really doesn't have anything to do with my ability to run the city of Mandeville."
Dude, several people have lost their jobs because of YOU! Take some personal responsibility and resign.
No memory, I don't think I have a problem? Famous first words of a true acholic. Give it up Eddie. Perhaps the people of Mandeville will forgive if you own up and do what is necessary to get yourself straight. In the mean time, DONT DRIVE. the life you save may be your own.
UH?!?! Two things Ed? Gary Copp, gift certificates, drunken driving, etc. etc. Walk into any bar in St. Tammany and ask the barkeep about "Sloppy Eddie". Just resign already and save yourself and family more embaressment.
Eddie Eddie Eddie! Look at the mess you've made.
Resign, maybe you and the people of Louisiana can retain some dignity.
It wasn't two incidents like you said in your interview, it was four highly suspicious events, the copp incident, the xmas fund, the causeway incident, and the recently released incident of 2006. These are just the ones we know about, I'm sure more will come out.
Please tell us you're not this dense?
Doesnt have a drinking problem? He has been drunk behind the wheel absolutely no less than three times. It's more likely 300. No drinking problem my foot.
Price needs to resign now. Not only for this, but by trying to influence a Mandeville police officer to reduce a felony charge down to a misdemeanor of one of his friends. Yes, the Speedee Oil change guy who repeatedly kicked a woman on the ground with his boots nearly killing her and causing permanent brain damage. Yes, the police officer brave and courageous, testified that Price had tried to convince him not to charge that animal with the correct crime and instead to charge him with a misdemeanor battery charge!
Toys for Tots. Nough said.
Price is a disgrace.
His family is enabling him to drink and drive and I hope it's one of his own he kills and not one of us next time he's driving drunk.
What a disgrace. He should be forced out of office and sent to prison.
Losing his job is not enough. He has earned his jail time.
How big of him to tell those who voted him in office that he won't drink and drive anymore. That's good, don't you think? The only ones who have told him he has their support are those directly under his supervision and members of his immediate family. I don't know how this man can have the gall to show his face in public after all the trouble he's caused. Those officers lost their jobs as a direct result of his actions. He is a disgrace to his community and for the sake of the town he should step down. Of course he thinks he can still be an effective mayor. Well, I have news for him. Resign and save what dignity you might have left.

Tell me why he should not be prosecuted for ethics violations?
The feds are watching Eddie very closely right now.
His best bet would be to resign, but he thinks he can endure the criticism. Endure the criticism long enough for a federal indictment, Eddie!
Oh my gosh!!! Who does he think he is kidding!!!! Mandeville does not need a drunk to run the city and hopefully a citizen will get enough guts to start a recall petition. The Mandeville Council already decided NOT to do anything about this so in my opinion they all should resign. I wonder how many times Eddie has "vowed" not to get behind the wheel again. I hope no one gets hurt when he "rarely" drinks. How can his wife and family not push for him to resign as well when you know they don't want to ever show their face in public again. How can Price and his family even sleep at night knowing that HE cost people their jobs because of HIS action or rather now lack of action???
I had plans to move back to Mandeville next month but I think I will wait now to see what the great "Mayor" does....somewhere else on the northshore will be just as good.
Are you kidding me? He says he has RARELY had a drink outside his own home since the causeway incident. One time is too damn many considering it's because of him others lost their jobs. He needs to see a counselor to decide if he has a drinking problem?????? The simple fact that he is still drinking....at home and RARELY outside of home says it all.
"I'm sticking it out.." - I bet the people that lost their jobs because of Eddie Price wish they had the opportunity to stick it out.
How can he honestly believe that his drinking and driving problems (on more than one occasion) don't prevent him from running our city? The citizens of Mandeville and it's surrounding communities are just lucky that he hasn't killed someone by now and we're left holding the bag when the city is sued.
Eddie, I was once a supporter of you but realize it's time for you to RESIGN and get your life in order.
Do the right thing....RESIGN RESIGN RESIGN RESIGN
Dosent think he has a drinking problem...."does not remember that portion of the night" Well, buddy you need help.
Does anyone find the irony in his promise not to drink and drive?
He just CONFESSED to drinking and driving and not being in a state to drive. Isn't this CONFESSION enough to prosecute him? Charges need to be filed.
He deserves punishment for what he has already done.
Every guilty criminal says to th parole board, "I'll never break the law again."
Is that reason enough to let him walk without punishment? Is that reason enough to believe him?
PUNISH THIS CRIMINAL.
Talk about denial-Eddie-surf the web for typical signs of alcoholism. You are strictly drinking at home lately? Can you go a week without a drink? You imbecile! YOU ARE AN ALCY!!!
And yes, Eddie-it is a very big deal. You are too stupid to be mayor! Your low IQ combined with your typical blood alcohol automatically disqualifies you for a public office job.
RESIGN AND EITHER GIVE UP DRIVING ALTOGETHER OR STOP DRINKING FOREVER-YOU CANNOT HANDLE ALCOHOL.
Well... I was beginning to feel sorry for Price and was even a little worried about how he was holding up mentally (being Mayor is all this man knows and he is about to loss that) through all this mess.
Then I read his quote about "sticking it out" and how all this was "personal". What an egotistical azz!
A friend of his called in to WWL this morning after he was on and said "Eddie doesn't have more of a drinking problem than anyone else."
I saw this headline and just laughed out loud. Are you kidding? Does he know how ridiculous he sounds?! He promises not to drink and drive?! Uh...that should be a given. Another total embarrassment to the greater New Orleans area. It's the culture, and it's rather pathetic.
Ignatiusyes, I just came on this site and we must have been having the same thought at the same time because I wrote on another site that it is time for his family to step in and take control of him.
He is making a greater fool of himself every time he opens his mouth and if they love him, (they may not) they should do the humane thing and pull him out. At least they would escape the disgrace.
And how will they justify their inaction if he continues on this path and kills someone.
Maybe he can give the toys-for-tots gift cards to the children of the officers that he got fired.
Wait....that's breaking news? Seriously? I didn't even read the story. The headline says it all!
Eddie,
Take Robert Lambert with you.
You have both accepted positions of trust. You have both violated that trust by trying to create a super class. You have both put people working under you in jeopardy. Resign. Learn humility. We didn't vote you in so you could abuse the power. Now, go away.
Typical response from an alcoholic in denial.
Attend one AA meeting, tell your story and let the group tell you whether or not you are alcoholic.
Duh............
On 2nd thought, I think Eddie should be arrested for being too stupid to move around freely in society! And, once he's in prison, the press should not quote him anymore so that none of us have to hear this blithering idiot!
Eddie's a big LUSH! Somebody buy him a couple of bottles of Jack-maybe he'll pass out and shut up.
What a total dumbass!
His only crime was getting caught. What a great guy. He fesses up after he is caught. I wonder how many times he skated that are not generally known about. And he will not give up his publicly owned vehicle. If he gets in and accident Mandaville, you (the tax payers) will pay.
That's one reason the insurance rates are 3 to 4 times what people elsewhere have to pay to insure their cars - everybody driving is half snorked up! Anytime you can drive up to a daquri store and order your drink "to go" the town is way too lenient and the laws aren't going to be enforced. It's time for some changes in laws and alcohol regulations.
Bet none of you self-righteous guys who want the Mayor blown away, or crucified in the media, NEVER drive after having had drinks! Yeah! Sure! The big difference is that Mayor Price, unlike you, was CAUGHT. I'm not condoning drinking while driving, not in the least, but unless this guy tried to frighten and intimidate the officers involved, who ended up losing their jobs, then he did what any of us would do when they've done something wrong . . . ACCEPT LENIENCY WITHOUT QUESTION. What was he supposed to have done, said, "Oh, no, officers, you can't let me go . . . you've got to cuff me and arrest me with every charge imaginable. Take me in and book me!" Sure you would have said that, right?
If he'd had big bucks and paid-off those on the scene, nobody would ever have heard a word about it. Trust me. If they cut him a break, it was their decision, or their superior officer's decision, not Eddie Price's. Bah! Humbug!
So Mayor Drunk is not going to "drink and drive"....
great.....we know you aren't going to stop drinking so just turn in the keys to OUR car and go on your way !!!yOU HAVE FIVE KIDS OVER 21 PLUS A VERY FORGIVING WIFE....SURELY, THEY'LL DRIVE YOU !
WE DON'T WANT YOU DRIVING OUR CAR ....GIVE IT UP AND HOPEFULLY RESIGN....THIS WILL NOT GO AWAY !!!
EDDIE, YOU MUST HAVE SPENT TOO MUCH TIME IN DADDY'S BAR AROUND TULANE
This guy cost four families a breadwinners paycheck. All he gets is a traffic ticket? He should resign. Barring his resignation, the people of the Northshore should vote him out of office the next chance they get. This syndrome seems to infect all our elected officials. Speed, drink and drive, call hookers, solicit sex from young boys, take bribes, get real estate deals, preferential rates on mortgages, 100%+ pay raises, loans they don't have to pay back, family members on payrolls for jobs they don't perform or even have to show up for. Who says we don't have Royalty in America!
nodrogezwoh!
Are you sippig from the same bottle of denial that Eddie is?
The man is a major embarrasment to his family, community and state. And these are the things that he's been caught doing, what more lies ahead?
Get the help you need! Admitting you have a problem is the first step!
Let me see if I can help you guys again:
Once you feed at the taxpayer trough, it is extremely hard to give up, too many perks.

The missing minutes of the causeway tape.......
Mr Mayor ....do you have a drinking problem???
Nope....I drink....I get drunk....I drive thru the gate......No Problem....................
RESIGN! QUIT! ADIOS! SAYONARA! GO AWAY! And please take that loser police chief with you.
And you people laughed when we voted for Nagin! HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
everyone faces circumstances that either build your character or they reveal your character. eddie you have chosen to reveal your true character. not owning your actions and using your position to hide behind, at the cost of others, is wrong and disgusting. i am sure the individuals that lost their jobs will be able to feed their families, keep the lights on, buy their kids birthday presents, etc, but not by the means they used before. neither should you. i hope the next time you do this you only kill yourself and do not take anyone innocent with you. shame on you.
I think Eddie should become an astronaut. We could blast him to Mars and forget the fuel tank for return trip.
"Whoops Eddie-planners had a couple of drinks when they developed the plan. Not a big deal. See ya."
The good news, folks, is that we might be able to dun this numbskull out of office. This was the kind of thing that used to be our "political entertainment" but I think the citizens are a little too angry about all the governmental failures in the aftermath of Katrina to just let the good times roll anymore.
"This is all personal...."
How can you call it personal when you were driving a CITY-OWNED car!!!
Look, I don't know the man personally but from where I'm standing - he's a stinking drunk! He doesn't remember going to the Shell station, he doesn't remember the Mandeville cops telling him not to drive, he doesn't remember crashing through that obnoxiously bright barrier at the toll plaza.....and I don't remember ever wanting a man with such a bad memory running my city!!! I don't have high hopes for this idiot either. Even if he resigns, he's likely to be pulled over for DWI again and maybe, just maybe, he'll finally get that long-overdue sobriety test. And when is he going to get in trouble for letting his son-in-law drive that city-owned vehicle?? What a farce!
Stop lying and saying what you think the public wants to hear to cover your A___!!!!!
The fact is YOU NEED TO RESIGN!
PRICE: "I'm sticking it out. I would hope the epitaph they write for me after I'm gone doesn't have any relation to the two things that happened," Price said. "This is all personal and really doesn't have anything to do with my ability to run the city of Mandeville."
Of course youa re sticking it out, I would to at $96,300 a year to manage a town of 12,000 + getting a city vehicle, etc...... Gimme a break!
It seems to me that the wrong people have been punished. The officers who stopped him knew that they were in a no win situation. The fact remains that whether or not they gave him a sobriety test, they couldn't win.
Doesn't he have any feelings for those officers? They have been punished and he still walks around with no punishment or responsibility for his actions. Do the right thing, own up to it and resign.
I agree with the above statements and blogs: Eddie Price needs to resign!
This is a blak eye for Mandeville that seems to be growing.
Simply another case of an elected official thinking he's above the law and putting his personal interests ahead of his public responsibilities. It's going to take him killing someone behind the wheel before anything gets done.
Of course he doesn't remember any of it!
HE WAS DRUNK!!!
LMAO
What a worthless and spineless piece of **** ...this is his 2nd time, 3 people have lost their jobs trying to protect him and all he does is vow not to drink and drive again plus stay in office? Why aren't the people of Mandeville calling for him to resign?
For the love, just resign and give the citizens some closure on this debacle.
Price should resign and apply to be a state river pilot. He would make more money and he has all the qualifications, it seems.
"This is all personal and really doesn't have anything to do with my ability to run the city of Mandeville."
Did you really believe this!? You are a worthless person who has no business serving in ANY public capacity. Note that I said "person" instead of "man". A "man" would own up to his mistakes, apologize for the hardship he has caused, and resigned a mayor. Your indiscretion has utimately led to several people losing their jobs and now they and their families trying to make ends meet while you sit around fat and happy while drinking beer trying to get everyone else to look the other way while you struggle to place blame anywhere you can instead of looking at the cause.
How can you run a city when you cannot manage your own life? You have demonstrated on several occasions that you lack the mental capacity to decide not to drive after you have been drinking.
Be a man, admit your mistakes, and resign. Why not help the people who lost their jobs because of you? I am sure they could use the help. Save your beer money and give it to the families of the officers you got fired.
Your legacy will be that of a drunk. These incidents are now the mark of your political career. Hang it up now and go sell some concrete. Jerk!

Price has the NERVE to tell the people of Mandeville that he does not plan to give up the the city vehicle? Is he still drunk? Guys and Gals - does this man REALLY have that much power in Mandeville? Can we get off the tennis courts, spa chairs and lunch tables and do something right to protect our families - the city council has seemingly gone on 4th of july holiday - what next ? Where is the recall petition?

Those cops should not have been fired. It would make more sense to fire them both if they were TOLD to arrest Eddie and refused to do so. These guys don't make 96k a year. Every causeway cop ought to resign!! Join JPSO, Slidell PD, anybody. No wondfer the Mandeville cops that stopped him two years ago don't want to be identified. A man should not be made afraid to follow orders.
Why aren't the people of Mandeville doing something about this? It's in the paper everyday. Quit posting comments about how upset you are and do something. You have to do actual work to get him to resign, not just rant and rave. If you do not stop this guy, he could end up killing you or your children in a city owned car. Do SOMETHING!!!

I don't live in Mandeville but have been following this story like everyone else.
Wondering how his wife & family felt when they heard him say he was going to see his "girlfriend". This guy sounds like a real winner. I really hope all you Mandeville residents push until he resigns.
As far as his comment that his supporters comments outweigh all others I don't know where. I haven't seen one supportive comment on here or his blog.
"I reckon I got no reason to kill no one."
--Karl Childers
We all know how that turned out.
Promises, promises....just resign already, Eddie.
No, I think Eddie isn't going to REALLY admit he has a problem until he kills someone. Of course, he thought taking extravagant gifts bought with the Toys for Tots money wasn't a problem either. On another website it states that Eddie Price has no plans on resigning from his job! Well, why should he he gets away with things that none of us would (that's for sure). He's gotten others fired from their jobs because everyone is afraid to arrest him for DWI! Give me a break.

Any JD's out there? What needs to happen to get this drunk off the street and out of office? (besides recall) Anything impeachable?
If not the City Council, what other agency is authorized to act in such instances?
NO, saying you will get a professional opinion is not repentence enough! What about the people who lost their jobs over all this? Does this man have no conscience?! He was going to see his girlfriend, for heaven's sake - his wife is the one who needs help for staying with him. He is a known womanizer - guess she looks the other way. Pity .........
Actually, he should stay in office.
Unless he is different than every other addict on earth, he will drink and drive again.
He will injure or kill someone else, and the city of Mandeville will then have to pay the price (pun intended), probably in the millions, for electing an out of control addict and not removing him from office in the face of irrefutable evidence of a looming tragedy.
Only then will justice be done.
And for the enablers still supporting him, aren't you doing him a disservice by shielding him from the consequences of his actions?
Maybe if he had to face some consequences it might actually put him on the path to recovery.
I think ( and I'm sure I will be corrected when I am wrong....) the information for a recall is on the Secretary of State web site??? Lousiana Secretary of State. Not sure how many votes we need though? ANy body have an idea?
Eddie Price is a disgrace and needs to resign. The people of Mandeville need to recall him if he does not. Where is thier outrage? HE was DWI in a city car at least twice in 6 months> I am sure there are many more times. If Joe six-pack had gotten caught once he would be in jail. He makes Nagin look wonderful.
When putting vodka in your freezer is it to the left or the right of the money?
Holy Cow! now this gets revealed, and he's still in office, and also in denial about his drinking problem?
How many others had to take the fall for this obvious drunk, who's endangered the public before, and will do so again if allowed to continue with no real penalties imposed.
Wake up Mandevile!
Where's the recall petition?
What a load!
Hey Eddie, you must really think we're stupid!
What a vow ... mighty big of you. I imagine people everywhere are really looking up to you now.
Tell you what ... I 'vow' not to steal or commit murder.
You're an disgrace and you need to go. Be a real man and admit what you've done and step down. Stop making BS vows!
You're a JOKE!
One more thing ...
How about we install one of those starter killswitch breathalyzer rigs in his car. That way vow or no vow, he CAN'T drink and drive!
We probably paid for that car anyway!
Hello, my name is Eddie Price and I do not have a drinking problem.
I just like a little nip every now and then.
I'd love to be a public figure in this state. It's like taking candy from a ...
NO! WAIT!
It's like TAKING TOYS FROM POOR CHILDREN AT CHRISTMAS!!!!
EDDIE YOU ARE A B@ST@RD!!!!!
Sorry but I can't stop. I'm like Mary Gross on SNL ... spittin' mad!
"I'm sticking it out. I would hope the epitaph they write for me after I'm gone doesn't have any relation to the two things that happened," Price said. "This is all personal and really doesn't have anything to do with my ability to run the city of Mandeville."
Doesn't he mean 'run into' or maybe 'run the city of Mandeville in the ground' please clarify ...
you coward! probably shouldn't have been drinking?? you were sloshed to the point you asked repeatedly what you did wrong after taking out a bridge barricade you idiot! you are a disgrace to your family, your profession, your city and your state. resign you incompetant slob! you are the laughing stock of the entire country and i would know because i'm from New Jersey! you cost men their jobs and you don't even have the decentecy to resign? what a pathetic piece of cow!
Q: Why doesn't Eddie Price ride a motorcycle?
A: Because he couldn't find a helmet big enough.
jafman2000.... You have him confused with dollar bill jefferson. Unless they are roommates. Also I do not think EP will drive drunk anymore. I think all his favors are used up. If I were a cop, I would haul him in and deal with it later. I do not think any cop wants to let him go. Its hard to fire a cop for doing his sworn duty. I think all cops are on high alert now.
PICKING ON EDDIE???
What is this 3rd grade?
Are you serious? Looks like someone else isn't aware of their drinking problem either!
Good Lord!
YOU are what's wrong with this state!
BE PATIENT BOYS AND GIRLS....I JUST FOUND OUT THE TRUTH ABOUT THE AUDIT JUST COMPLETED AND DRUNK PRICE IS HISTORY AND MAYBE GOING TO JAIL.
THE TRUTH ALWAYS RISES...GOD BLESS AMERICA.
EDDIE, HOPE YOU ENJOY THE FOURTH....WHY DON'T YOU GO GET A FIFTH !!!
BYE.
I think this entitles everyone to a "get out of jail free card" if pulled over for suspicion of drinking and driving.
Separately, where was Eddie going that night?
Does anyone know? Could it have been a brothel somewhere?
Duh... What a great idea. Nobody should be driving while drinking and especially not our Mayor. Sorry Eddie but it's time that you stepped up to the plate and practice what you preach. Too bad that other decent law abiding citizens including the Director of the Causeway had to lose their jobs trying to cover for your stupidity. Fortunately, you didn't kill someone this time.
How about setting an example for the citizens of this town?
jjc23 - you must be Eddie's girlfriend? Picking on him? Honey - do you live in Mandeville? Are you drunk? You must be on the City Council? Oh is this coogan?
Toll Booth Eddie will not give up the keys to "his" car. That car belongs to the citizens of Mandeville.
Grow an onion Toll Booth Eddie and stop making a fool of the people there and all over Louisiana. Leave your spot at the trough and get a job. Possibly a bartender?
I didn't think I had a substance abuse problem either, but then I got pulled over by Mandeville P.D. after taking sleeping pills & getting behind the wheel of a car (I have NO memory of this)& they had a very different opinion....
I went to jail for a few days, then to inpatient rehab, & now I'm in AA. It took months of listening to other people tell their stories to realize that no matter how much money I have, who I know, what college I graduated from, or what I look like, that I am NOT special when it comes to addiction.
Now I realize that my arrest was probably the best thing that ever happened to me....
Eddie, I hope you have the same epiphany that I did.
SuckySaints-- you must be the "sister" old Eddie was going to see. Do you do Covingtons High principal on Eddies off nights?
WOW I satisfied now, let's now elect him to more prestigious offices such as congressman or govenor, we have his word
He means it this time. If you saw his wife you would drink too!!
Being a drunk on personal time has nothing to do with being the Mayor? A Mayor is Mayor 24/7 and not a part time position. You are the top elected official and leader of the community and should lead or set the example. What kind of example is this for young adults. Also, would you look the other way if another employee behaved in the same manner on their personal time especially driving a public owned vehicle? Regardless of your "good deed" track record, you failed your community as a leader on several fronts. How in the world can you look at the tape of yourself and say....that action meets the standard of what is expected of a Mandeville Official. Now you say "I have a problem" and make hollow promises. Are you going to go back and revisit employees who have been fired or reprimanded for similiar or less offences? If you can't even hold yourself accountable, how can you manage a city? Your are a failure as a leader and Mayor. You should resign.
I agree he needs to resign and go to rehab, all because of him, several men have lost their jobs shame shame on him. And yes recalls work on mayors, someone needs to get that party started.
Price: "This is all personal and really doesn't have anything to do with my ability to run the city of Mandeville."
Maybe, maybe not. But it does have EVERYTHING to do with the safety of the citizens of Mandeville. Citizens who entrusted you with the job and title of Mayor. What part of "Do not drink and drive" does not apply to the Mayor?
I guess as long as you don't kill someone it's ok to drink and drive. This is a sad statement from a person in authority. How can you enforce laws when you don't follow them? How can you expect an honest police force when you're up to clown tricks? How are we supposed to teach our children right from wrong when the adults in authority don't d
