by Judy Walker, Food editor, The Times-Picayune
    Thursday August 21, 2008, 5:05 AM

Cooking Creole's Marcelle Bienvenu dishes up roasted veggies in this week's Food section.

This week in Food, Marcelle Bienvenu's recipes for all kinds of well-seasoned roasted vegetables are the perfect accompaniment to any grilled steak. (You will especially love the roasted artichokes.)

Then, Vincent Pigna shares his recipe for Pazzo blue crab and pasta with Exchange Alley, which also includes recipes for Creamy brandy Alexanders. A Slidell resident who is just now getting around to replacing recipes lost to Katrina asks for a popular Artichoke leaf appetizer.

Inside, MiLA chefs Allison Vines-Rushing and Slade Rushing share a signature recipe for Oysters Rockefeller "Deconstructed," which you can also see them make on a video on NOLA.com .

New Orleanians' food relief trip to Cedar Rapids was "awesome"

    by The Times-Picayune
    Wednesday August 20, 2008, 12:00 PM

A group of New Orleanians traveled to Cedar Rapids Iowa to serve more than 1700 meals to flood victims.

New Orleans cookbook author Amy Cyrex Sins said the recent flood relief trip she organized to Cedar Rapids was "AWESOME!!! It far exceeded my expectations."

Sins, whose home flooded after the levees failed, planned the trip after learning that Iowans who had volunteered to help New Orleans had themselves become victims of the same thing.

Cookbook is a good guide to whole grains

by Judy Walker, Food editor, The Times-Picayune
    Wednesday August 20, 2008, 2:00 AM

Cookbook review: "The Complete Whole Grains Cookbook: 150 Recipes for Healthy Living" by Judith Finlayson (Robert Rose Inc., $24.95)

As whole grains play an ever-more-prominent role in diets, Finlayson's guide to them comes at a good time. She defines and showcases all kinds, even Job's Tears (hato mugi) which is not even really available in North America. The hard seed casings make the grain often used to make prayer beads and jewelry, we learn.

Kosher Cajun: Where kosher meets Creole

    by David Gladow, NOLA.com
    Tuesday August 19, 2008, 10:49 PM

The Reuben at Kosher Cajun is worth a taste.

The meal: Reuben with potato latkes and a Dr. Brown's cream soda
    The price: $15 or so
    The verdict: 7/10

"I think they must be sports fans."

The accuracy (and humor) of that statement is only apparent to those of us who have stepped foot in Kosher Cajun, which is (I'm told) one of only two kosher restaurants in the New Orleans area.
